Hybrid & electric benefits
Choosing an electric or hybrid car isn’t simply good for the environment, it also brings a host of benefits to you as a driver. For starters, you’ll pay a lot less in fuel costs; with the average UK electricity rate sitting at just over 16p per kWh, topping up to 100 miles of range costs less than £3.40. Servicing and maintenance is typically less expensive too, since there are fewer moving parts to be checked, and with lower emissions, road tax is cheaper. Added to that is the dynamic performance that comes from the instant torque produced by the electric motor – a 0-60mph sprint can be achieved in under 10 seconds, even in an SUV.
How to charge
Charging your electric car is simple. At home, you can use a standard three-point socket or a home charging point, which can be fully installed from £449 with the government OZEV grant. The latter option reduces charging time significantly, making it more efficient and convenient. Many public locations across the country also have charging points, which usually offer 7kW charging – that’s 20-30 miles of range per hour. They can be found in car parks at the supermarket, gym, cinema, or local shopping centre. For rapid charging, visit a service station.
