Can businesses get grants for electric vans?

If you buy an electric vehicle for work, you can benefit from lower congestion charges and money towards installing an electric vehicle charge point.

Previously, drivers of electric vehicles could claim grants ranging from £1,500 to £16,000, depending on the vehicle type. However, in June 2022, the government made the decision to discontinue the low-emission vehicles plug-in grant. Instead, the funds are being redirected towards enhancing electric vehicle charging facilities, ensuring better accessibility and convenience for electric vehicle owners.

Due to this change Maxus have introduced a new EV Enhancement offer; Save up to £14,000 off a brand new Maxus Electric Plus receive a Free Home or Workplace Charger! Find out more >

Do electric vans pay congestion charge?

Do electric vans pay congestion charge?

No! If your work requires travel within urban areas, owning an electric van provides various travel incentives:

  • In London, electric vehicle owners are exempt from paying the congestion charge, resulting in a daily saving of £15 (until 24 December 2025).
  • Electric vehicle owners are also not required to pay the daily fee of £12.50 as part of the ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ).
  • Similar low emission zones exist in other cities such as Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Bath, and Oxford, offering additional benefits to electric vehicle owners.

Electric car charging points for business

The government has introduced an Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme, which offers up to 75% towards the cost of installing electric vehicle charge points at homes.

There’s also the Workplace Charging Scheme, which offers vouchers towards the cost of buying and installing an electric vehicle charge point at a workplace.

Tax benefits owning an electric van

What are the tax benefits owning an electric van for your business?

If you buy a vehicle for your employees to use as a company car, they’ll need to pay company car tax and you’ll need to pay National Insurance at 14.53 per cent.

The benefit in kind tax rate for employees with electric cars and vans used to be 16 per cent. However, it was reduced to zero per cent in April 2020, rising to one per cent in April 2021, and two per cent from April 2022 to April 2025.

The benefit in kind rate will increase by 1 per cent each year from 2025 until 2028.

Electric vehicle owners are also exempt from the following:

  • vehicle excise duty (until 2025)
  • van benefit charge
  • fuel benefit charge
  • fuel duty

If you buy an electric business vehicle personally (rather than as a company car), you can claim 45p per mile as a business travel expense, despite the cost of an electric vehicle being an estimated 4p per mile.

Should you buy or lease an electric vehicle for business?

Both Options have multiple benefits. If you lease your electric van you can lower the initial expenses which provide greater flexibility to adapt to evolving technology, such as longer intervals between charges.

However, buying an electric van you'll receive multiple financial incentives for buying an electric business vehicle and the running costs after your initial outlay are likely to be very low.
